Japanese Particles Quiz: Wa, Ga, Wo, Ni and De in Context

A particle expresses the role of a word or phrase in a sentence. The English word at does not always give the same Japanese particle. Read the verb and the surrounding context before choosing the missing character.

Before you start

In these beginner patterns, を marks an object, に marks a location of existence or an exact time, and で marks where an activity happens. は can establish a topic, while が can identify the person answering a who-question. With a destination and 行く, に and へ may both be possible; an exercise must make the intended distinction clear.

When you miss an item, explain the role of the phrase rather than memorising the place name beside it. The same park can take に in 公園にいます and で in 公園で走ります. Use the answer explanation to connect the particle to existence, movement, an activity or focused information.
