Kore, Sore, Are and Kono Quiz: Japanese Demonstratives
Japanese demonstratives depend on both distance and sentence structure. These ten questions ask you to notice whether a word stands alone, modifies a noun, or names a place. Check where the item is relative to the speaker and listener.
Before you start
これ, それ and あれ can stand alone as nouns. この, その and あの must be followed by a noun, as in この本. ここ, そこ and あそこ identify places. In the physical situations used in beginner examples, the ko-series is near the speaker, the so-series is near the listener, and the a-series is away from both.
Do not put これ directly before 本 when you mean this book: use この本. Also keep a thing-word separate from a place-word. After answering, point to an object near you, an object across the room, and a place, and choose the appropriate series for each.
