N5 foundation checks

N5 Kanji Practice: Readings and Written Forms

Read kanji in whole words, distinguish similar characters, and practise with 80 foundation characters and 240 exercises.

How to approach the questions

Read a word rather than assigning one sound to a character. 日 appears in 日本, 日曜日 and 三日 with different readings. Learning a complete word gives you the reading used in that context. Keep irregular dates such as 四日 and 八日 alongside their meanings.

Similar shapes need careful comparison: 人 and 入, 木 and 本, or 日 and 白. Look at the whole word and sentence before selecting a written form. Recognition practice checks whether you can choose the right character; it does not measure handwriting ability.

Each foundation check has four kanji-reading questions and four written-form questions. For further practice, the connected reference has 80 selected foundation characters with 240 exercises. This is a practical selection for beginners; it is not presented as an official exhaustive N5 kanji list.
