  1. 1

  2. 2

    小(ちい)さいです。返品(へんぴん)してもいいですか。

  3. 3

    レシートはありますか。

  4. 4

    はい、あります。これです。

Explain the situation first

Start with すみません and explain your purchase. 昨日、このシャツを買いました means you bought this shirt yesterday. 買いました is the polite past form.

小さいです says it is small; 大きいです says it is large. Describe the actual problem. A size problem and a damaged item are different situations.

Ask for permission

返品してもいいですか asks whether returning it is allowed. Add もいいですか to the te-form and wait for the staff’s answer.

This conversation practises asking about a return; the staff has not accepted it yet. Having a receipt alone does not establish permission to return the item. Conditions can differ by shop and item.

Show the receipt or item

Answer レシートはありますか with はい、あります if you have it, or いいえ、ありません if you do not. Add これです when showing the receipt in your hand.

これ can indicate an item near you, and それ one near the other person. この requires a following noun, as in このシャツ; これ can stand alone.
