Choose は・が・に・で・を from the sentence

Identify the topic, focused subject, location of existence, location of an action and object in complete sentences.

First find the predicate: does the sentence describe existence, an action or movement? Then decide what role each phrase plays. A place word alone does not tell you which particle to use.

Compare 図書館にいます with 図書館で勉強します. For は and が, read the surrounding question or contrast instead of assuming that one translation always identifies the right particle.

Topic and focused information

は establishes what the sentence is about. が can identify the answer to a who-question. Read the context before choosing.

だれが来ましたか。田中さんが来ました。

Who came? Tanaka came.

Existence and action locations

Use に for where someone exists and で for where an activity happens. A location alone does not determine the particle.
