前に and 後で locate one action relative to another. The verb attachment changes: 食べる前に but 食べた後で. The dictionary form before 前に does not make the whole sentence future; the final predicate determines the main time.
Formation and use
Use the dictionary form before 前に even in a past account: 寝る前に本を読みました. Reading happened before sleeping; 寝た前に is not the target pattern.
Use た before 後で: 食べた後で歯を磨きます. The first action has been completed relative to the second, even when the second is a future plan.
Comparisons and common errors
Nouns take の: 授業の前に, 仕事の後で. These time expressions differ from physical 本の前に when 前 means in front of something; context identifies the time or space reading.
Compare 食べてから with 食べた後で. Both can place eating first, but てから often highlights that the first action is a prerequisite or clear starting point. Avoid inventing an exact time gap for either form.
