Examples
Meaning
〜の上, 〜の下, 〜の中, 〜の前, and 〜の後ろ mean on, under, inside, in front of, and behind. They are basic place expressions for describing location.
Formation
Put the reference noun first, add の, then add the location word. For example, 机の上 means on the desk, and かばんの中 means inside the bag.
Usage
Use these expressions before に when saying where something exists. For things, use あります. For people and animals, use います.
Nuance
The noun before の is the reference point. In 本は机の上にあります, the desk is the reference point, and the book is located above it.
Comparison
These expressions often work together with 〜は〜にあります, 〜は〜にいます, and 場所に〜があります/います. The の is necessary because it connects the reference noun and the position word.
Common Mistakes
A common mistake is dropping の, such as 机上にあります in beginner conversation. For N5 learners, use 机の上にあります. Another mistake is forgetting に after the full place expression.
