Use と to join the items you are explicitly listing and や to present examples from a larger set. Keep the companion use of と separate from list structure.

Decide what your list claims

りんごとバナナを買いました names apples and bananas as the listed purchases. りんごやバナナを買いました presents them as examples among the purchases. や often appears with など after the final example: りんごやバナナなど.

A と list does not prove that the speaker bought nothing else in the entire shopping trip. Its completeness is understood within the category or question being discussed. If you need a strict “only these,” express that limit explicitly rather than making と carry all of it.

One particle, another role

友達と行きます means going with a friend. Here と marks a companion; it is not joining two shopping items. This exercise states when it wants a list of examples and when it wants the companion marker, avoiding an ambiguous choice between two possible lists.
