Recognise three common kinds of checkout question and give a clear reply. Practise the action requested rather than memorising はい as a universal response.
Listen for the object and action
袋は必要ですか asks whether you need a bag. 温めますか asks whether to heat something. A short お願いします can accept a service; 大丈夫です can decline in many checkout contexts, but the same expression is context-dependent. If the situation is unclear, いりません states that you do not need the item more explicitly.
For heating, 温めてください is a direct request. 店で食べますか and 持ち帰りますか concern where you intend to eat or whether you will take something away. This page practises the language and does not describe current charges or tax treatment.
Make your payment question specific
カードで払えますか asks whether you can pay by card. Do not assume that a familiar logo or another shop’s policy guarantees an answer. Wait for the actual reply before completing the purchase.
